Recruitment in the Digital Age
Introduction
Digital recruitment refers to the process of using modern
technologies to find, attract, analyze, select, and hire candidates to fill an
open job role. It goes beyond posting job vacancies online and social media,
rather it highlights a host of digital tools and strategies that covers the
entire recruitment process from start to end (Owusu, 2020).
Recruiting is a major concern for most of the employers these days. Digital recruitment can make the overall process of recruiting much easier. Because it is highly useful for online recruiters to search employee profile, assess them for experience and skills and send them a quick response asking them for a chat or about a novel opportunity (Reddy, 2021).
Advantages of digital recruitment
According to Barcelos (2018) with more and
more job seekers turning to digital platforms and social channels in search of
jobs, companies are now digitalizing their recruitment process to build their talent pool.
This has triggered a new wave of digital
tools that are streamlining and simplifying the recruitment process to fill
vacancies faster while significantly reducing the time, effort and money spent
on the hiring process with following advantages.
Ø Smart filter intelligence
and frees up valuable time spent on manual resume screenings
Ø Save a lot of
human effort by automating manual recruitment process steps
Ø Accelerate time to
hire by reducing the paperwork
Ø Give access to
accurate data in real time resulting in better hiring decisions
Ø Eliminates the
need to hire a recruiting agency
In global context, Anchor Group, a nonprofit senior housing and care provider
built a custom chatbot for Facebook Messenger for their recruitments. It ran a
series of Facebook ads with a “Send Message” call-to-action that took users
directly to the company’s Messenger. The chatbot
engaged potential candidates immediately and took care of much of the upfront
work of a recruiter. The bot found out what position the candidate was
interested in, whether they were qualified, and whether they lived within
commuting distance. It also collected necessary information, like name and
email address. Applicants responded well to the chatbot. Anchor Group increased its conversion rate from
2% with traditional recruiting to over 27% with the chatbot. The higher conversion
rate reduced the cost per applicant from £51 to £18 (Chandran, 2020).
In Sri Lankan
context, Sri Lanka Telecom, the digital service provider in Sri Lanka is using
all the technological advancements in its HR operation including recruitments. Green
HR policy with paperless office concept is one of the major digital initiatives.
Conclusion
Digital recruitment helps to reach most
skilled and talented candidates today easier than ever. No longer, companies are
restricted to a local newspaper or bulletin board for attracting the best
talent and organizations can recruit around the world for job listings from the
comfort of their own office.
