Why Employee Relations are Important?


Introduction

Employee relations refers to an organization’s efforts to manage relationships between management and employees. An organization with a good employee relations program provides fair and consistent treatment to all employees and they will be committed to their jobs and loyal to the company. Such programs also aim to prevent and resolve problems arising from situations at work (Shinn, 2019).

Employee relation is a crucial factor when it comes to overall organizational performance. Because good employee relationship management leads increased employee wellbeing and performance. Since employees are the engine of any organization, management wants to make sure that both relationship between management and employees and relationship among employees are well maintained (Verlinden, 2020).

 

Benefits of employee relations

According to Martic (2020) organizations with good employee relationships enjoy many benefits and it is easier for the management to engage, motivate, understand and keep their employees. Following are key benefits of building positive employee relations in the workplace.

 

v  Higher rates of employee engagement - Share, review and update employee expectation leads to good employee engagement.

 

v  Employee satisfaction - Employee engagement directly affected to employee satisfaction. More engaged employees are more satisfied.

 

v  Employee productivity - Employee satisfaction and engagement boost employee productivity. Organizations with well-structured employee relations benefited higher productivity, revenues and profits.

 

v  Employee retention - Employees who know organization way forward and feel secure their job with better engagement and satisfaction leads to higher retention while preventing employee turnover.

  

v  Employee empowerment - Taking responsibility and autonomy by employees to manage their own work and make decisions to achieve their own goals.


 

In global context, Google is the well-known company in the world when it comes to management and employee relations. The company is very transparent about the culture that they want to create in their office. Google believes that it is crucial to break down the barriers between staff members at every level, so employees can feel empowered and inspired at work.

 

In Sri Lanka context, both professional and political unions are actively engaged in activities to strengthen the relationship between management and employees in Sri Lanka Telecom. Specially in critical situations where it has an direct impact on employees of the organization, management always tend to create a dialogue with trade unions to arrive in decisions. Since SLT is providing an essential service to the public without any disruption, accountability of management and trade unions can be seen to maintain good industrial harmony.


Conclusion

Strong and efficient employee relations lead to better performance and workforce productivity in an organization. Employees always looks forward to working in a comfortable place with a healthy environment. The management has to work in developing a culture that promotes positivity, discipline, and coordination among people working in the organization. Happy employees look forward to contributing towards the vision, mission, and goals of the organization they are working for.
