Importance of Employee Recognition in the Workplace

Introduction

In today’s competitive work environment, drivers of the companies are the ones that have the best-trained and well-skilled smart staff. However, best employees also cannot perform well when they are not motivated enough. This is why employee recognition in the workplace has to be an essential part of any organizational culture (Andriotis, 2018).

What is employee recognition?

Employee recognition is the acknowledgment of a company’s staff for exceptional performance. Ultimate objective of employee recognition in the workplace is to reinforce particular behaviors and practices that result in better performance and positive business growth (Andriotis, 2018).

According to Jones (2019), employee recognition is an utmost important and essential motivation factor. This leads to create greater amount of staff retention. Although many leaders consider this to be a considerable effort, it is certainly worth investing time in.

Why employee recognition is important?

One of the biggest motivators for employees is the recognition for their hard work by the management. While most businesses would relate employee rewards with bonuses or extravagant award events, employee appreciation does not have to be expensive. Employee rewards and recognition could be as simple as a complement, a ‘thank you’ email or even a friendly greeting at work.

Employees have the desire to be appreciated and recognized for their hard work in their job role. However, it is not always easy to create a good employee recognition programs, but they are vital. Therefore, employee recognition is important to:

§  Retain top talent

§  Increase Employee Engagement

§  Encourage high performance

§  Retain the business success

§  Boost morale

According to Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace (2017) research, the number one reason people leave jobs is limited recognition and praise. Furthermore, when consider that the same research showed that 85 per cent of worldwide employees are disengaged, the need to improve culture, values, transparency and, in line with all this, recognition, is profound (Ward, 2018).

Sri Lanka Telecom PLC as the national digital service provider in Sri Lanka is conducting “Service Excellence Awards” annually to recognize its employees. In addition to that, all sales campaigns of the company at team and individual levels are being recognized regionally.

Conclusion

Employee recognition affects the bottom line of any business. In addition to that, it leads to higher retention rates, improved productivity and boosted self-esteem. Further, this will result in more profitable work force, better teamwork, significantly faster results, and improved customer relationship. Taking time to say ‘thank you’ to employees and appreciate them will ensure company reap the benefits in the long run.
