Helping Employee Professional Development to Organizational Success

 


Introduction

The professional world is becoming competitive and continuously changing. Therefore, professional development and continual learning is more important than ever in being successful and achieving personal and organizational goals (Antley, 2020).

Professional development of employees is referred to as a process during which employees, with the support of their employer, go through professional training to improve their skills and grow their knowledge. Helping employees to improve their strengths and grow their skills better equips them for their role. This add up more value to the work they do and directly benefits to the business. In addition to that making learning and development culture within the organization, helps improve employee engagement, increase retention and attract elite candidates (Heinz, 2021).

 

Importance of investing in employee professional development 

Investing in professional development of employees also helps to make them feel valued. Making an investment in the future of an employee can show organization is willing to help them to reach their full potential. Full of valued individuals with morale and, in turn, productivity an all-time high (Crawford, 2016). Professional development programs improve employees' knowledge, skill sets and job satisfaction, resulting in higher employee retention (Meyer, 2021).

Professional development of employees are ensured standards across the company are high and consistent. Professional development opportunities promotes greater work engagement from the workforce and a general commitment to job roles. Significant number of employees with proper professional development allows for the sharing of best practice and support with the colleagues. Further, this contributes to maximize staff potential, improves staff morale and provides a useful benchmark for any style of appraisal system that used within the business (Hudson, 2021).


In global context, GSK attracts and retains talented people by investing in training and development tailored to their needs and building on their strengths. GSK, career development is about building experience and capability of its employees. The company offers learning opportunities, which include on-the-job experiences, developmental relationship, which includes support and feedback through coaching, mentoring and feedback from managers and peers; and formal development, such as e-learning, coursework and classroom-style trainings

In Sri Lankan context, Sri Lanka Telecom is investing for professional development of its employees in January and June each year. SLT provides financial assistance to interested employees to develop their career by doing PhD, MBA, Postgraduate, Diploma and Certifications. In addition to that, SLT is investing in their employees to participate local and foreign trainings and workshops on priority basis.

 

Conclusion

Professional development opportunities give employees a chance to grow with the company and value their job, in return, company can experience higher retention, improved efficiency, re-energize staff and well engagement of employees.

  2. even though some company invest the special employee developments ,employee need to sign the agreement with the company. Some times it will be a disadvantage for employee future.
